Metaphor workshop – a course in creativity

Churchill created the world famous metaphor ”iron curtain” for the mental border between eastern and western Europe after the war. Nelson Mandela named the new South Africa ”The Rainbow Nation”, describing how different cultures live happily together. And former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher was often labelled an ”iron fist in a velvet glove”.

Here are som more well-known examples:

Marilyn Monroe told us what fame could be like by this simile: ”It's like caviar, you know, it's good to have caviar but not when you have it every meal every day.” And American ex-president Bill Clinton made this comparison on one of his inaguration speeches: ”We must provide for our nation as loving parents provide for their children.”

French president Charles de Gaulle is remebered for this expression: ”No one can govern a nation with 246 different cheeses.” And he was very pessimistic about the Common Market saying: ”The dream of a united Europe is an utopia – you can’t make an omelette with boiled eggs.”

Comedians often use metaphors/similies to create humor: ”Writing a letter to your loved one is like drawing a ham sandwich when you are hungry.

or

”A mother in law is a rattlesnake in a human body shape.”

Anyone can create images in peoples mind. Let this workshop inspire you to make your own metaphors and similies for any topic.
